Turkey vs. Italy News, Analysis, and Picks

At long last, after a disappointing postponement a summer ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, EURO 2020 is here! Europe’s best will be on display as there will be highs, lows, and plenty of drama. The tournament kicks off on Friday at 3:00 p.m. EST as Italy will be right at home at the Olimpico in Rome.

The Italians have gone undefeated in 27 straight matches and have shown no signs of stopping. Although, their level of competition has not been as strong as it will be within this competition. Their Cerberus-like attack of Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, and Domenico Berardi is as strong as it gets and will likely give the Turkish defenders plenty of fits. Young goalkeeper phenom Gianluigi Donnarumma will be tough to score against between the sticks and will have long-time center-back pairing Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci in front of him to challenge the Turkey attack.

Italy’s strong backline will be tested by a Turkish group who have given even the world’s stingiest defenses some issues. A 4-2 victory over the Netherlands and a 2-0 triumph against France are just a few examples of how dangerous they can be in attack with less than 40 percent possession in both matches. Manager Senol Gunes has had previous success with the national team and can lead the squad to overachieving results. Striker Burak Yilmaz netted a hat trick in the Netherlands outing and has five goals in his last four starts. He’s a constant threat to score and will need to in order for the Turks to succeed at EURO 2020. Midfielder Ozan Tufan will lead the break and can be a danger of his own when joining the attack.

With an underrated defense, a capable striker, and an ability to convert goals against the world’s best, Turkey certainly has a fighter’s chance in the competition’s opening match. They feel undervalued at the level of plus money they have reached but give yourself some insurance.
