June 12 NBA Betting Guide: Clippers Are Overvalued As A Five-Point Favorite

NBA Betting Guide for Saturday, June 12

Both visiting teams won convincingly on Friday night to even the ATS mark of away teams at 30-30 (-1.5 units). With only one game on the card today, it will be interesting to see a similar outcome in today’s game featuring the Jazz and the Clippers. Los Angeles desperately needs a win to get back in the series, but can they do it?

Let’s take a look at this matchup to see where the value lies from a betting perspective.

Utah Jazz vs. Los Angeles Clippers, News, Analysis, and Picks

I believe that we’ll get some response from the Clippers in Game 3. It was quite a struggle to figure out how to get involved in the game — whether it’d be a first-quarter or a first-half wager. However, after looking at all the options, I’ve done a complete 180 and instead would prefer to back the visiting Jazz as a five-point underdog. The current line is just too high to back the home team in this spot as my model doesn’t have Los Angeles any higher than a 2.5-point favorite.

Utah won two of the three meetings this season against Los Angeles and outscored them by 20 points. The Clippers will hope to get more out of their role players this time around as perhaps a change in scenery will give them more confidence to perform at a higher level.

However, I haven’t seen Los Angeles do anything to solve or slow down Donovan Mitchell. It hasn’t really mattered who they’ve tried to use to defend him or if they try to trap him or send double teams. None of it has worked as Mitchell has elevated his game while the other Clippers star, Paul (Playoff P.) George, has wilted under the spotlight.

If you’ve watched the games, then you know that the Clippers have really had to work hard for every shot they take. And while they’ve been a decent three-point shooting team this season, they’re not as good as the Jazz, who led the league with 16.7 three-point field goals per game during the regular season.

The Clippers’ problem in these games is that they’re often trailing from behind, which means they have to hoist up more three-pointers to stay close to the Jazz. But, unfortunately, that style of play works against them as it plays right into Utah’s hands.

As a result, Los Angeles hasn’t shown any reason that warrants them being a five-point favorite. And while they might eke out a win in this game, I expect that this game will be closer than the experts think.

Thus, I’m much more inclined to take the points with the visiting team.

The Bet: Jazz +5
