New Orleans Pelicans vs. Charlotte Hornets News and Notes
The New Orleans Pelicans playoff hopes took two big hits on Friday. First, they found out superstar Zion Williamson will be out indefinitely with a fractured ring finger on his shooting hand. Second, they got the news second-leading scorer Brandon Ingram is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. Bad things really do happen in threes as New Orleans went on to drop a game they were heavy underdogs in after leading with under two minutes to go that night.
New Orleans had a one-point lead over the Sixers with 1:39 remaining and had a chance for the last shot of the game when down two in Philadelphia. Eric Bledsoe turned the ball over with 2.3 seconds left as the Pels had ten seconds to run a final play.
Jaxson Hayes scored a season-high 19 off the bench to lead New Orleans, while Bledsoe had 18. Lonzo Ball also added 18 and pulled down seven boards. The new team’s leading scorer at 14.7 a game with Zion and Ingram out will have to step up as the Pels are two games back of San Antonio for the final play-in spot. One of his first tests comes against a team with New Orleans’ former nickname and a player that shares his last name.
Lonzo’s brother LaMelo will help lead the injury-ravaged current Hornets NBA franchise against the team that held the name until 2013 when they became the Pelicans.
LaMelo is already leading the Rookie of the Year race as the odds on favorite at -550 at the FanDuel Sportsbook. The freshman Ball is coming off a stellar Friday night, scoring 27 while adding six assists and six boards in a 122-112 win over Orlando.
The Hornets’ point guard leads all rookies with 6.2 assists per game and is second in scoring, putting up 15.9 a night. With Gordon Hayward and his 19.6 points per game on the shelf with a sprained right foot, Ball also slides into the second-team lead in scoring.
Leading scorer Terry Rozier went well above his average on Friday night with a team-high 28 points against the Magic. PJ Washington has also stepped up lately with his third straight 20-plus point game scoring 23 while adding nine boards.
Charlotte picked up their third win in five games and sit in the eighth seed in the East. The Hornets can move to .500 on Sunday and create some distance over ninth-place Washington, who is 1.5 games back. Charlotte is also two games back of Boston for the seven spot and can clinch at least a play-in spot with a win Sunday.
New Orleans has covered in four straight following a loss and as an underdog. The Hornets are 1-5 against the spread after a win and also when playing on one day’s rest. Charlotte hit the under in seven of eight as a home favorite while the Pels went low in seven of eight overall. New Orleans has covered four straight in Charlotte and 21 of 32 overall head-to-head meetings.
