Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings News, Analysis, and Picks

The Chicago Blackhawks picked a bad time to lose their second game of the year to division rival Detroit. Chicago sits four points back of the Central’s final playoff spot and is coming into tonight’s rematch following a 4-1 loss to the last-place Red Wings on Thursday. The Hawks had beaten Detroit in five of six matchups this season before allowing four straight goals after taking a 1-0 lead. Troy Stecher scored twice for the Wings, while Thomas Greiss stopped 24 shots for Detriot’s third consecutive win. Patrick Kane was a disappointing -4 and is a good candidate for a bounce-back game against the league’s 25th ranked defense and 24th ranked penalty kill.

In three of seven head-to-head meetings this season, the Hawks and Wings have combined for eight or more goals, with another three games hitting five in the total. Four of Chicago’s five wins over Detroit have been by multiple goals, while each of the Wings’ wins has been by at least two goals.

The Picks: Blackhawks Cover -1.5 (+184), Total Over 5.5 (-114), Patrick Kane Over 0.5 Powerplay Points (+114)

Florida Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning News, Analysis, and Picks

The Battle of Florida is about as hot as it’s ever been since the Lightning and Panthers came into the league. Tampa is tied atop the Central with Carolina at 60 points, while Florida can leapfrog both teams with a regulation win on Saturday night.

The Lightning struck with 54 seconds left in overtime on Thursday night to take a one-point lead in the standings over Florida. Norris candidate Victor Hedman scored his eighth of the year to end it 3-2 in the extra frame. Andrei Vasilevskiy was arguably even more valuable in this one making 36 saves and actually picking up his third assist of the season (only if it counted in fantasy leagues!) on Alex Killorn 11th of the year with the man advantage in the second. Despite Tampa managing only 19 shots on Chris Driedger, they picked up a third win in three games overall. Florida picked up just their third point in five games following a pair of regulation losses to the Hurricanes and a split with the Stars.

The five-goal total was the first under and first one-goal games of the five-game season series so far. Florida can knot the series at three wins apiece with a victory on Saturday and need the points to keep pace after a mini-season slump.

The Picks:  Panthers moneyline (+132), Total Over 5.5 (-134), Jonathan Huberdeau Over 0.5 Points (-154)

Nashville Predators vs. Carolina Hurricanes News, Analysis, and Picks

Sticking with our Central division Saturday night theme, the Hurricanes look for their second win over the Predators in three nights and to improve to 6-0 against fourth-place Nashville on the season.

Carolina picked up their fourth multi-goal win of the year over the Preds on Thursday with a 4-1 victory. The Canes jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second, thanks to Vincent Trocheck’s 17th of the year. Trocheck then assisted on the nail in the coffin when Sebastian Aho scored his 18th on a late third-period Canes’ power play. Carolina’s defense held the Predators to just 20 shots, 19 of which Petr Mrazek stopped on a fairly quiet night at the office for the former Red Wing. This was the second time in the season series the total hit five while Carolina’s other three wins ended with six combined goals in each game.

The Canes won their first game in three after surprisingly getting swept by the Red Wings in a two-game set to start the week. Nashville had won two straight, including a 7-2 drubbing of the Lightning, before again being dropped by their Carolina kryptonite this season.

The Picks:  Hurricanes Cover -1.5 (+132), Total Over 5.5 (-106), Jordan Staal Over 0.5 Points (-114)
