Sam Darnold Outlook: Jets Moving On?

For once, it seems that the New York Jets are being prudent and have decided to take their time in deciding how to proceed at the quarterback position and whether Sam Darnold will still have a future with the organization.

The Jets hold the second pick in the upcoming draft, and they’ve made it a point to evaluate every quarterback in the draft that’s not named Trevor Lawrence. If they don’t value any of the remaining quarterbacks with the second pick, they should hold on to Darnold for another season. Darnold is still on his rookie contract, so holding on to him for one more year should still leave the Jets with plenty of maneuverability in their salary cap.

New York could always consider improving their offensive line by selecting tackle Penei Sewell out of Oregon.

However, if they’re able to find a quarterback who is at least comparable with Darnold, then it would make sense to go in that direction and trade Darnold for whatever draft compensation they can obtain for him.

If you’re a Jets fan, though, you’re probably still hoping they’re working the phones for a possible trade with Deshaun Watson. That would probably be the best-case scenario for the Jets front office, even though they continue to remain quiet on the subject.
